Emergency Management

211's Role in Emergency Response and Recovery

In addition to the information and referral services provided in communities every day, 211 has demonstrated the ability to support members of the public, emergency responders, municipalities and other non-government organizations during and following an emergency incident. As part of the non-emergency communication system, 211 can play a vital role in supporting municipalities as a public information channel – disseminating authoritative information to the public, and reporting back to municipal officials regarding caller needs and trends in real time.

With the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, a two-year project is currently focused on clarifying and communicating this important 211 role. This includes working with municipalities, Emergency Management Ontario, emergency responders (police, fire and emergency medical services) and non-government organizations such as Red Cross, Salvation Army, St John Ambulance, Victim Services and animal welfare organizations to ensure that communication protocols are in place.
