and trade associations
Professional associations for both regulated and non-regulated
professions and trades (including some local unions), which
may set standards and guidelines for conduct and practice,
as well as offer information and referral, continuing education
programs, networking opportunities and other benefits associated
with membership.
Regulatory
bodies
Regulatory and licencing bodies require that their members
meet professional standards and ethics. They have the authority
to set entry and training requirements, set standards of
practice, assess qualifications and credentials, register
qualified applicants and discipline members.
Apprenticeship
offices
Apprenticeship offices provide information on becoming an
apprentice or tradesperson in Ontario. Training consultants
assess employers and potential apprentices/tradespeople,
prepare the training agreement (contract) and start the
training.
International
credentials
Services for people who want to know how to get their foreign
educational or occupational credentials assessed to determine
Canadian equivalency for employment purposes. Includes
organizations that, for a fee, will provide credential
assessment.

Resource Centres
Centres that provide assistance for people looking for jobs,
career direction or help starting their own business. May
provide job posting boards, resume services or access to
the Internet for job searches as well as free or low cost
access to computers, telephones, fax machines and photocopiers.
Business directories, job search materials, and labour
market information may also be available.
Human
Resource Centre Canada offices
Human Resource Centre Canada (HRCC) offices provide services
to employers, unemployed and underemployed people. Services
include access to job banks and labour market information.
They also have applications for social insurance numbers
and for income security programs (such as Employment Insurance
and the Canada Pension Plan).

search training
Job preparation training in skills such as resume writing,
interviewing, punctuality and workplace behaviour.

Search Workshops
Job Search Workshops are condensed three- or four-day workshops
for job ready newcomers who are legally entitled to work
in Canada. They focus on job search techniques and on accessing
labour market information.

Finding Clubs
Job Finding Clubs (JFCs) are job search workshops that run
for intensive three-week sessions. They are run by community-based
organizations, private sector groups, and public service
organizations. Most JFCs focus their programs on a particular
community, skill-set, or industry.

Job Connect programs provide walk-in services and general
resources for people seeking employment, career direction,
or information about starting their own business.

Programs for people who want to start their own businesses.
Vocational
counselling
Vocational and career counselling to determine employment
preferences, experience, and aptitudes.
Volunteerism
Information and programs for people who would like to volunteer
in the community.
Mentoring
programs
Programs that match newcomers with mentors in their profession
or trade, who provide one-on-one support and guidance.
Employment
programs for foreign-trained professionals and tradespeople
Specialized services, including mentoring, work placement
and job search programs for internationally trained professionals,
and tradespeople.
Other

Other employment programs with a specific focus on newcomers.
Includes services provided at local community centres,
libraries, ethnocultural associations and other informal

GICs provide a wide range of general information about all
provincial government services.

NICs refer newcomers to local immigrant-serving agencies

Government-funded settlement services including Immigrant
Settlement Adaptation Program (ISAP), Newcomer Settlement
Program (NSP) and, Settlement Workers in the Schools (SWIS).
Culturally-specific

Settlement services not funded by government, generally offered
by specific cultural associations or groups.

Government-funded English classes with a settlement focus
for newcomers, including landed immigrants, convention
refugees, and holders of appropriate authorizations or
